Jules & Charles, perfect mix of Italian , French and Belgian kitchen

IMG_0845Every time I go to a restaurant I hope it’s good enough to share with you and luckily we are spoiled with some great restaurants in Brussels. In my own area it was hard to find one that, as my friends tend to say, is bobo worthy. But that has now changed with Jules & Charles. Jules & Charles is conveniently located two streets from where I live and passing by I already saw they did a great job in changing a former newspaper store into a cosy corner restaurant. Two weeks ago we managed to get a reservation and try it out for ourselves…and it was a pleasant visit. The interior is a nice mix of industrial lamps and concrete floor with warm wooden walls. The red barstools and electricity wires give a touch of color. There is no menu, but the suggestions of the day are written on the big blackboard, as are the wines you can drink by the glass. The staff is friendly and a nice lady gave us the necessary explanation of the dishes that were on offer that day. At Jules & Charles you eat a nice mix of Italian, French and Belgian cuisine.

IMG_0848For a starter I had one of the best vitello tonato’s I have eaten so far. The tuna sauce I had a nice texture and taste, the tender and pink meat was really well cooked and the dish was pimped up with some samphire and oysterleaf. Bram had Scallops with some great oven baked onions and dried pancetta. In our glass we had a lovely Chablis Josselin. This was a lovely start of the meal. For the main dish I stayed in the Italian atmosphere and went for homemade Tagliotini with wild mushrooms (porcini, horn of plenty ) in a simple tasteful preparation with a bit of garlic and plenty of olive oil. Bram had a whole sea bream filled up with herbs and lemon, oven baked potatoes and a green salad. Again simple, honest and made with fresh ingredients. In our glass we had a nice red Spanish wine from the Priorate region. To end the meal in beauty I had a light and great version of Panna Cotta, made of greek yoghurt. Bram tasted some home made sorbets (lemon, basil, raspberry).

IMG_5812Jules & Charles is definitely the restaurant the neighborhood was waiting for. The joyful and lively ambiance in the restaurant add to the feel-good mood. Hope to come here soon again and hope you do well. Don’t forget to let me know what you thought of it.
